Extension Unit 6 2º Bto.

REPORTED SPEECH: Reported Statements : other changes.
When we convert direct speech into reported speech there are changes in :

  •  pronouns and possessive adjectives:
I'm watching you __He said that he was watching me.
I have lost my book __ She said that she had lost her keys
  •   demonstrative adjectives and expressions of time:

I will buy these jeans __ He said that he would buy those jeans.

Como ya tenéis los cambios en los pronombres y adjetivos posesivos en la entrada Varios Bto, unidad 6 1º Bto en este mismo blog os recuerdo los cambios en las expresiones de tiempo y lugar.

Reported Questions: en el estilo indirecto tienen el mismo orden que una oración afirmativa.

  • Si la pregunta indirecta no tiene question word, utilizamos if / whether en el estilo indirecto :

Ex.- "Are you fine?", he asked us---He asked us if /whether we were fine.

  • Si la pregunta utiliza una question word (who, why...), repetimos la -Wh question en el estilo indirecto:

Ex.- "What are you eating?"---He asked her what she was eating.
(Observa que el orden en la pregunta indirecta es sujeto + verbo (igual que una oración afirmativa)

Reported orders, requests and suggestions: En el estilo directo utilizamos el imperativo para las órdenes o sugerencias, pero en el estilo indirecto la estructura es ésta: reporting verb + object + to infinitive.
Ex.- "Sit down!" --- He ordered them to sit down.
Si la sugerencia o la orden en estilo directo es negativa, en el indirecto la estructura es: reporting verb + object + not + to infinitive: "Don´t shout! "---He told her not to shout.

Other Reporting Verbs: algunos verbos que se utilizan para introducir el estilo indirecto siguen diferentes estructuras:

  • Agree / offer / promise / refuse   + to infinitive: "I will help you" ... He offered to help him.
  • Add / admit / declare / explain / insist / predict / promise / recommend / reply / reveal / say / suggest + (that) + clause: "You must call me "--- He insisted (that) I called him.
  • Advise / ask / encourage / invite / order / remind / tell / persuade / warn + object + to infinitive: "You really should become a professional dancer "--- She encouraged me to become a professional dancer.
  • Advise / inform / remind / tell / warn + object + that + clause : "Don´t forget! There is an exam tomorrow". ---They reminded us that there was an exam the following day.
  • Recommend / suggest / propose + -ing form / noun: "You should try the salad ".--- He recommended trying the salad // He recommended the salad.
  • Apologize for / complain about / insist on / object to + preposition + -ing form / noun: "Sorry I was rude."---She apologized for being rude.
