ORACIONES SUBORDINADAS:
CLAUSES OF TIME (SUBORDINADAS DE TIEMPO)

a) Cuando nos referimos al futuro, utilizamos una oración en presente simple detrás de las conjunciones after, as soon as, before,  by the time, until, when:

Ej: I will phone her when I get home. (La llamaré por teléfono cuando llegue a casa)
      I won´t talk to them until they apologise. ( No les hablaré hasta que pidan perdón)

Cuando en una oración simple utilizamos el futuro perfecto, éste se convierte en pretérito perfecto en una oración subordinada temporal.

Ej: We will have moved to the new house by the end of the week (futuro perfecto)
( Nos habremos mudado a la nueva casa hacia finales de semana)
As soon as we have moved to the new house, we will invite our Friends (pretérito perfecto)
(Tan pronto como nos hayamos mudado a la casa nueva, invitaremos a nuestros amigos)

b) Cuando nos referimos al pasado, solemos utilizar una oración en pasado simple detrás de la conjunción.
Ej: We looked through the window when we heard the noise (Miramos por la ventana cuando oímos el ruido)

c) Podemos emplear el pretérito perfecto o pluscuamperfecto con after, as soon as, until, when cuando queremos enfatizar que la acción expresada por la oración temporal estará totalmente acabada antes de que empiece la otra acción:
Ej: Don´t open the present until you have done your exercises (No abras el regalo hasta que hayas terminado tus ejercicios)

d) Con before también utilizamos los tiempos verbales mencionados en c, pero en este caso la acción no estaba concluída antes de que empezara la otra:
Ej: She arrived home before he had cooked dinner (Ella llegó a casa antes de que él hubiera hecho la comida).

e) Utilizamos while con el pasado continuo para expresar dos acciones simultáneas.
Ej: I was reading while my sister was playing (Yo estaba leyendo mientras mi hermana estaba jugando). Pero también lo utilizamos en la oración subordinada temporal cuando en la oración principal usamos el pasado simple: The lights went off while I was watching TV (Las luces se apagaron mientras estaba viendo la televisión)

f) As lo utilizamos con dos oraciones cortas que ocurren al mismo tiempo:
Ej: As we arrived home, the dog started to bark (Cuando llegamos a casa, el perro empezó a ladrar)

g) Podemos emplear la estructura It´s + período de tiempo + since + oración subordinada con el verbo en pasado simple: It´s a long time since we (last) saw your brother (Hace mucho tiempo que vimos a tu hermano por última vez). Esta oración también podríamos expresarla de esta manera:
We haven´t seen your brother for a long time.

Exercise 1.

I'll be ready as soon as you  (be).

We'll stay here until she  (return).

Please, call us when you  (arrive).

I'm going to tell her before she  (leave).

I don't know when the party  (start).

He'll drive you there whenever you  (need).

The moment summer  here, the garden will be so beautiful! (be)

I am going to take the exam after I  all these books. (study)

He will wait for you until you  (be back)

Don't worry! I'll watch you while you  in the lake. (swim) Exercise 2. I would like to finish it. It will get dark. (before)  We are going to have a rest. We'll be on holiday. (while)  He will not regret it. She'll move away. (until)  Can you water the flowers? We'll leave the house. (when)  ? Get in touch with him. I'm going to write to him.
